Psychiatry is a medical specialty devoted to the study, prevention and treatment of mental disorders. A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in working with people who have emotional and mental disorders and may order medical tests to help determine the cause of the problem. They are also able to write prescriptions for medications and when necessary admit people into a hospital for further tests and treatment.
Psychiatric assessment typically involves a mental status examination and the taking of a case history; and psychological tests may be conducted. Physical examinations may be carried out and on occasion neuro images or other neurophysiological measurements taken. Diagnostic procedures vary.
Our board certified psychiatrists are trained in the latest methods to help you understand and treat most psychiatric problems including: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), acute stress, alcohol abuse, anger management, anxiety, bipolar affective disorder, cyclothymic disorder, depression, dysthymic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, social phobia and specific phobia.
Psychiatric medications are sometimes used when the psychiatrist determines that they may benefit the patient. Medications are often used to help relieve depression, anxiety and panic attacks, help with sleep and sometimes to calm the mind. If it is determined that medication is necessary, an evaluation by one of our psychiatrists is completed and a follow up appointment for medication and possibly counseling will be made. Sometimes the best treatment is a combination of both medication and counseling.
All appointments are at the American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN) and are held confidentially. We make every effort to return your initial call within 24 hours. A diagnostic assessment is usually available within 48 hours of your call.
